Week 7 of the Nervous-System States (Modes) Series


When features of more than one nervous-system state occur at the same time.


Recognizing the Experience


Many people notice that their symptoms do not fit neatly into a single nervous-system mode.


You may feel physically restless while emotionally shut down, highly activated while unreal or disconnected, or exhausted while unable to settle.


Some people describe feeling "wired but exhausted," "agitated but emotionally flat," "restless and disconnected," or unable to relax while also unable to fully engage.


At times, one mode feels strongest while features of another remain present underneath.


These experiences can feel confusing because they seem to contradict one another. Yet they are all part of the same withdrawal process.



What Is This State?


Over the past several weeks, we have described four common nervous-system modes: hyperarousal, shutdown, depersonalization/derealization, and motor activation.


A mixed state occurs when a single nervous-system state expresses features that we recognize from more than one mode.


The categories we use to describe nervous-system modes are helpful, but the nervous system does not always organize itself into one clearly defined pattern.


The brain continuously monitors signals from throughout the body and integrates them into an overall picture of the body's physiologic state. Because that overall physiologic state reflects activity across many interacting systems, the nervous system may express features that we recognize from more than one mode.


A person may experience features of hyperarousal, shutdown, depersonalization/ derealization, or motor activation in many different combinations and intensities.


Rather than representing several unrelated problems occurring at the same time, these experiences usually reflect changing patterns across interacting brain–body systems.



What Is Changing in the Body?


During mixed states, multiple brain–body systems change together.


Different dimensions of nervous-system function do not always change in the same direction. Activation may remain high while energy and engagement are reduced. Motor restlessness may coexist with exhaustion, and altered perception may occur alongside autonomic arousal.


Because stress, autonomic, motor, sensory, and engagement systems are related but not identical, they can form combinations that seem contradictory.


Rather than expressing only one mode at a time, the nervous system may temporarily express features that we recognize from several modes.



Connection to the Five-Axis Stress Biology Framework™


Within the Five-Axis Stress Biology Framework™, mixed states reflect overlapping patterns of signaling across multiple interacting brain–body systems.


Changes in stress regulation (Axis 1), amplification and excitability processes (Axis 2), autonomic regulation (Axis 3), movement and motor regulation (Axis 4), and neuroimmune/visceral regulation (Axis 5) may all contribute to these overlapping patterns.


A mixed state does not usually reflect one system acting alone. Instead, it reflects changing patterns across multiple interacting brain–body systems functioning together in different combinations.



Why Mixed States Feel So Confusing?


Mixed states often feel frightening because the experiences appear to contradict one another.


You may feel exhausted but unable to rest, emotionally numb but physically agitated, or unreal while also intensely aware of your body.


The contradiction is only apparent. The nervous system is capable of expressing features that we recognize from more than one mode at the same time.


Because these experiences seem so different, it can feel as though several new illnesses are developing simultaneously. Most of the time, however, they reflect one changing nervous-system state rather than several unrelated conditions.


The experience is real because the underlying nervous-system state is real.



Important Clarification


Mixed states are common during periods of nervous-system instability in withdrawal.


The presence of overlapping modes does not necessarily mean permanent worsening, new damage, or multiple unrelated illnesses.


Many people experience features of several modes at the same time, especially during periods of poor sleep, physiologic strain, overstimulation, or reduced reserve.


These experiences reflect changing patterns of nervous-system regulation rather than personal weakness or failure.

Completing Series 3


This concludes Series 3 of the Nervous-System States (Modes) Series.


Throughout this series, we explored how the nervous system can organize into recognizable modes of activation, shutdown, altered perception, and motor activation. We also examined why these modes shift over time and why they sometimes overlap.


Understanding these modes provides a framework for recognizing that withdrawal is not simply a collection of unrelated symptoms. It reflects changing patterns of nervous-system organization across the brain and body.


In the next series, we will build on this foundation by exploring why symptoms cluster into recognizable patterns, and how one nervous-system state can produce many symptoms across different parts of the body.
