Why Withdrawal Behaves Like a Systems Problem


Benzodiazepine withdrawal looks chaotic because multiple stress-responsive systems activate at once.


When GABA restraint drops, several stress-responsive systems can activate at once:


- Axis 1 — CRH/adrenergic alarm pathways

- Axis 2 — Excitatory–neuroinflammatory circuits (sensory and microglial activation)

- Axis 3 — Autonomic regulation (heart rate and blood pressure rhythm)

- Axis 4 — Basal ganglia–cerebellar motor loops

- Axis 5 — Neuroimmune and visceral regulation, including mast-cell reactivity


Together, these form the Five-Axis Framework — five domains defined in advance from clinical observation and the physiological literature, then used to organize the symptoms our patients reported.


This does not mean your symptoms are random or imagined. Grouping them this way makes complex, overlapping presentations easier to describe, discuss, and track over time.
